Tips for growing sunflowers

Sunflowers love the sun, so choose a sunny, well-drained position that is sheltered from the wind.  Next to a fence is ideal as you can use it as a stake once your plant begins to grow further down the track.

Depending on the type of sunflowers seeds you have, you will need to space the seeds anywhere from one to three feet apart.  Make a hole approximately 4cm deep, place the seed inside and cover gently with soil.

Water the seeds well to keep them nice and moist until the seed begins to sprout.  Seedlings should pop out of the ground in a week or two, keep in mind though that at the beginning sunflowers are slow growers.

Once sprouted you may want to cover the seedling with a plastic milk bottle, with the bottom cut out or place mesh netting around them.  This will stop pests like birds attacking your hard work and will the give the sunflower seedlings a good head start.

Happy gardening!
